Madeline Island Candles, a candle shop on Lake Superior and client of CIULLA ASSOC has been nominated as a finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards. Celebrating the American entrepreneurial spirit, the award brings recognition to the local craftsmen that take exceptional pride in their work.

We started working with Madeline Island Candles in 2012 as they were ready to take their craft to the next level. Michael Childers and Glenn Carlson began making natural soy wax candles in 2009 to support Woods Hall Craft Shop on Madeline Island. The candles became a passion for them, and soon a full time business. They realized they needed an identity for their new business and retail packaging, and eventually a new website.

Excited to take on this project, we took inspiration from their island home, just as Michael and Glenn had in naming their many candle varieties. In our research, we discovered the native Ojibwe peoples of the region called the island “Land of Golden Breasted Woodpecker". The identity we created respects that heritage, and our simple packaging approach enhances the natural ingredients and hand crafted qualities of the candles themselves (full case study available in the work section of our website).

We are proud to see one of our small but hard-working clients get the recognition they so richly deserve. We believe in their products and designed their packaging and branding to reflect their passion and craftsmanship. We hope you'll check out Madeline Island Candles, and vote for them in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards, starting Sept. 21, at www.MarthaStewart.com.
