NATURALLY ILLUMINATING

MADELINE ISLAND CANDLES | BRAND IDENTITY & PACKAGE DESIGN

A small but growing candle business wanted to expand its horizons beyond the shores of its island home in Lake Superior. Sustainable packaging and a simple identity were the first steps.

CREATING AN OWNABLE ICON

Located a few miles off the Wisconsin shore in Lake Superior, Madeline Island is rich in history and scenic beauty. Accordingly, Madeline Island Candles uses only natural materials in their candles, like soy wax, cotton wicks, and real essential oils and fragrances. They wanted a new identity that embodied both their mission of sustainability and aspects of island life.

In our design research, we learned that the island is called Moninwunakauning Miniss by the native Ojibwe people, meaning Home of the Yellow-Breasted Woodpecker. The bird identity CIULLA designed pays respect to that special heritage.

A NATURAL EXPERIENCE

Taking more cues from the natural beauty of the island, CIULLA designed a full complement of materials for the company, including packaging, business papers, interior and exterior signage, posters, direct mail, and Website design. CIULLA continues to collaborate with the company as they develop new products and ways of connecting with their clients.

The island is an incredibly beautiful place, and Madeline Island Candles wants you to be able to experience that beauty, wherever you are.
